He practiced veterinary medicine in Bunkie from 1947 to 1972. He was a Veterinary medical officer and supervisor in the Meat and Poultry Inspection Division of the La. Department of Agriculture from 1972 until his retirement. He was an organizer and a charter member of the Louisiana Veterinary Medical Association, where he served as president for two terms. He co-authored the first state Rabies Law in Louisiana. He was the La. Veterinarian of the Year in 1964 and received the La. Veterinarian Medical Association 1954 Award for Outstanding Service. He was a World War II Army veteran, having served in the European Theater of Operations. Mowad, 68, of Oakdale died Monday, Sept. 18, 2000, in a traffic accident outside of Forest Hill. He was a native of Oakdale and graduated from Oakdale High School. He attended LSU and graduated from LSU Medical School in New Orleans in 1955. He was a member of the U.S. Air Force Medical Corps during 1957-1958 and after discharge he completed a family practice residency at Lafayette Charity Hospital in 1959. He established his family practice in Oakdale in January 1960 and was on the medical staff of Oakdale Community Hospital. He was a member of the Allen Parish Medical Society, Louisiana State Medical Society, Louisiana Academy of Family Physicians, American Academy of Family Physicians and American Medical Association. He developed three sub-divisions and three business centers between 1962-1972. In 1972 he was elected mayor of Oakdale, a position he held for 20 years. He was responsible for having Oakdale selected by the U.S. Justice Department to build a Federal Correction Institution. He was past Grand Knight of the Knights of Columbus Council 3534. He received Oakdale's Civic Service Award and was Louisiana Family Doctor of the Year in 1982. He was preceded in death by parents, Mary and Joe S. Mowad; brother, Anthony P. Mowad.
