He moved to DeRidder in 1993 where he was employed with BDM, Corp. at Fort Polk. He was a commissioned officer in the U.S. Army for 16 years, retiring in January of 1998. He was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church of Chattanooga, Tenn., and attended First Baptist Church of DeRidder. He received his B.A. from the University of Tennessee and his master's degree from Central Michigan University. While duck hunting in a canoe, a sudden strong storm apparently capsized his craft dumping him into the frigid water in October 1990. His body was recovered 6 months later still encased in ice. Sommers, age 20 years, two months and eight days, departed this life on earth Saturday, August 25, 1919 at 3 p.m. He had been employed at the U.S. Public Health Service Hospital at Camp Stafford (forerunner of Veteran's Administration Hospital in Pineville since April 1919, and had won quite a number of friends while there. He was of a very sunny disposition and will be greatly missed among his comrades, friends and relatives. He received the best of attention at the hospital where he had undergone an operation for appendicitis, but all that loving hands could do for him could not stay his life. He leaves to mourn him loss, a father, J.A. Sommers of near Baton Rouge; two sisters, Mrs. Ben Stokes of Pine Grove, La., Mrs. O.F. Reeves of Pineville, La. and one brother, Sgt. J. Gordon Sommers of Camp Dix, N.J. and a host of relatives. His remains accompanied by his father and sister, Mrs. Stokes and Miss Jennie Stiles of Alexandria were taken to his home near Baton Rouge for interment. The casket was beautifully decorated with flowers furnished by the doctors, nurses and attendants of the hospital and other friends. The deceased was a member of the Baptist church for quite a number of years. Services were conducted at his father's home. He was laid to rest in family graveyard. He was survived only by his wife of 67 years, Gladys Ina Fussell Stephens of Glenmora, La. She has now been moved by her only surviving niece to Texas.
