Pickett, Judge, Eleventh Judicial District Court, Division "B", was appointed on July 27, 1960, to serve the remainder of the term of the late Honorable Edwin M. Fraser, who died in office. On November 8, 1960, he was elected for a six-year term, and was unopposed in the 1966 election for another six-year term. Judge Pickett, prior to his election to the office of District Judge, was appointed to serve during the unexpired term of T.M. Phillips as school board member for Ward Four, Sabine Parish, Louisiana. He was re-elected to that office for three successive terms, and only resigned when he was appointed District Judge. He was elected a member of the Democratic State Central Committee for the parish of Sabine, in 1952, and was unopposed for three successive terms since that time. Judge Pickett is the son of the late G.A. Pickett and Mary Ella Sheppard Pickett. He was born in Miller County, Arkansas, on March 3, 1892. Schools attended by Judge Pickett include the Ida High School, Ida, Caddo Parish, Louisiana; Valparaiso University, Valparaiso, Indiana; Tulane University; Louisiana State University; and Centenary College, where he received a Bachelor of Arts degree. On February 27, 1919, Judge Pickett was married to Margaret Hatcher and their children are: John S. Pickett, Jr.; Eleanor Joy Pickett Phillips; and Mary Charlotte Pickett Ruffin. Judge Pickett was the principal of the Fisher High School, Fisher, Sabine Parish, for eleven years immediately prior to June, 1928. Prior to his appointment to the office of District Judge, he practiced law for thirty-one years in his home town of Many, Louisiana. His hobbies: hunting and fishing. # # #
