He was a native of Dale, Ala. His second marriage to Sarah Ann Elliott, a native of Jefferson, S. C, and daughter of Isaac and Winny Elliott, was about 1865. In 1849, he served in the Mexican War with Company D, First Battalion Alabama Volunteers. In Mexico, he contacted the measles, and while ill marched from Vera Cruz to Cordoba, sixty miles, and then to Orizara. There were seven children born to this marriage, five survived to adulthood.
