Evans, M. D., was born in Choctaw county, Ala., on the 29th of October, 1848, the second of nine children born to John H. and Sarah A. (Phillips) Evans, who are natives of the state of Mississippi, the former's birth occurring in Wayne and the latter's in Rankin county. They were reared, educated and married In the state in which they were born and are now residents of Clark county. Mr. Evans is agent for the Alabama Land Development company, is surveyor of Clark county and has for many years been engaged in planting, in which business he has beenvery successful. They have five living children: John A., James B.,Newton J. and William P., all of whom reside in the same county as their parents with the exception of Dr. A. T. Evans. The latter was educated at Pierce's Springs in Clark county, and at Bladen Springs,Ala., began the study of medicine, at the age of twenty years, in the office of his uncle, J. S. Evans, M. D., entering the Medical College of Alabama at Mobile in 1871, from which institution he graduated in the spring of 1873. The same year he entered upon the practice ofhis profession in Richland parish, La., but removed to Hernando county,Fla., in 1884, where he practiced one year. At the end of this time he returned to his former homein this county,since which time he has been a practitioner of Alto and has succeeded in building up a lucrative practice, his knowledge of his calling and his genial disposition making him a welcome visitor in the sick room. He has always been engaged in planting more or less since locating in the county, and he and his brother-in-law are the joint owners of 1,080 acres of land on Boeuf river, of which 300 acres are under cultivation. The Doctor was married in 1877 to Miss Alice Hatch, a daughter of R. W. Hatch of Richland parish. To their union three sonshave been born: Buckner H., Alfred J. and Richard F. The mother ofthese children died inFlorida in 1885, where the Doctor had taken her for the benefit of her health, at which time she was in full communion and an earnest member of the Presbyterian church.Dr. Evans is also a worthy member of this church, and is highly esteemed by all who know him as a high minded gentleman, as well as a worthy citizen and an excellent neighbor.
