Guill is one of the prosperous merchants and planters of Richland parish, La.. He first saw the light of day in this state in 1858, but his father Josiah Guill, was a Virginian by birth, born in 1812, but he was reared in middle Tennessee, his calling being that of a planter. In 1888 he became a resident of Louisiana and here soon became prominent in politics. He was also a member of the A. F. & A. M. for many year. was a consistent member of the Baptist church. He was an enthusiastic patron of education and was the founder of Keachie Female college. In 1888 his marriage to Miss Mary C. Ligon was celebrated. She was born in Tennessee in 1821, was reared in that state, and in Mt. Lebanon, Tenn., she received her education. Her union with Mr. Guill resulted in the birth of two sons and five daughters, of which family John H. is the eldest son and fifth child. Josiah Guill died in January, 1875, his widow still surviving him. John H. Guill obtained his education in the schools of Keachie, but in 1878 removed to Alta, La., where he engaged in planting, in which calling he was quite successful. He opened a stock of general merchandise to the public in 1883 and now carries a large and complete stock, from which he derives a paying annual income. His plantation consist. of 2,800 acres, about 500 acres of which are under cultivation, and in every enterprise to which he has devoted his attention he has been reasonably successful, being now i n good financial circumstances. He is a shrewd financier and his present prosperity is owing to his diligence and good management. He is a very active politician, but has never been an office seeker.
