According to several old-timers, the community was named by a Mr. Hewitt, who observed the ridge sticking out of backwater and thought it was as crooked as a snake. There were frequent backwaters and every time a lot of snakes crawled to the high ground. This also might explain the name. Some early settlers were Tom Choat, Peter Bade (who immigrated from France), the John Thomason family, and William Tom Hewitt (whose sons were named Carey and John). John Hewitt’s daughter married a Mr. Brunson and then their daughter married a Mr. Parham. Henry Sheppard and Eddi Boies also were among the early settlers.
