(From the Richland Beacon.) The most horrible and atrocious murder that it has ever been our painful duty to chronicle, has just given a heart-rendering shock to the entire people of Richland parish. On Tuesday evening last, the 2nd inst., about dark, Mr. Thomas Archibald, one of the most highly respected, honored and beloved citizens of our parish and State, was called from his residence and brutally assassinated. Two men, armed with double barrel shot guns, rode up to the gate in front of his house and hailed. An old negro man went out to answer the call. They asked if Mr. Archibald was at home, and expressed a desire to see him. Mr. Archibald heard them talking to the negro, and walked out to where they were. As he was in the act of placing his hand upon the gate in a leaning position, the man to his right asked, “Is that you, Mr. Archibald?” He answeard [sic] “yes,” and ere the word had escaped his lips the assassin fired upon him, the whole load entering his right breast, near the armpit, and passing though his heart and lungs, sevearl [sic] shot coming out under his left arm, killing him instantly. His daughter, who was sitting in the passage of the house, about thirty steps form the gate, screamed, and her mother ran out and rushed to the gate where Mr. Archibald was lying dead, the black- hearted assassins still sat upon their horses, looking down over the gate at the corpse, in order to satisfy themselves that their bloody design had been accomplished. After satisfying themselves that he was dead, they rode off at full speed leaving for parts unknown. SAME EDITION: Gov.
