October 5, 1889 Confederate Veterans Association of North Louisiana The meeting of the Confederate veterans at Ruston, on the 16th of September, resulted in the organization of the association whose name appears at the top. We congratulate the people of Ruston on such an organization and trust that the future meetings of our old soldiers, who served their country so nobly in the late conflict, will be as pleasant and instructive as the cause for which they fought was noble and just. We give below a part of the proceedings: Ruston, La. Sept. 16, 1889 Judge Allen Barksdale was unanimously elected President of the Association, Dr. R. Roberts and J.L. Bond Secretaries. Col. T.C. Standifer offered the following resolutions, which were adopted: 1. Resolved by this meeting, that we, the Confederate veterans' Association of North Louisiana. 2. Resolved, that all persons who volunteered, and all those who honorably served in the Confederate services during the late War between the States, shall be eligible to membership in this association. 3. Resolved, that the objects and purpose of this association shall be literary, hence benevolent, social and historical. 4. Motion made and adopted. Resolved, that the Excecutive Committee of the organization be and they are hereby instructed to make arrangements for a general reunion of all the Confederate soliers of North Louisianan at some suitable place and appropriate time in the future, and that we recommend the 8th of April 1890, the anniversary of the battle of Mansfield, as the time and Ruston as the place for this reunion. The following resolution was offered and adopted: That the Solders' Home at New Orleans is an institution which commends itself to this association for its vigorous support. Resolved, that we will do all we can to induce our parishes to aid the Soldiers Home, and that we now call up on the members of the State Legislation to see to it that in the future a bet or appropriation is made to maintain that institution. Moved and adopted, that each member of this association at the next meeting will furnish a condensed history, or record of his soldier life. and certificates of the same, signed by the President, be given to the members.
