In the death of Mr. John M. Gwin, of near Archibald, on last Tuesday morning at 5:30 o'clock, Richland parish loses one of its best and most useful citizens. Born Nov. 29, 1845, reared near where he died, living all his life in the same community, he was well known by everyone; and, after his long life few men it may be said of him commanded the universal, sincere devotion and admiration of all who knew him and had felt the warmth of the great heart within his noble bosom as he did. Mr. Gwin came of sturdy old stock, such as were pioneers in the opening up of this country, and possessed the courage and daring of his forbears. He was the elder son of a family of five men and women, only two, of which, one brother, Mr. A. J. Gwin, of Winn Parish, and a sister, Mrs. S. P. Burk of near Rayville, survive him. Of his own immediate family he leaves a wife, two sons, Levi J. and Harvey Gwin, of Mangham, and two daughters, Mrs. Jno. R. Anderson, of Oak Grove, and Mrs. G. C. Pardue, of Mangham. He was buried at the family cemetery on Wednesday, many friends from different parts of the parish paying respects to his honored memory at the grave. Mr. Gwin was a very successful planter all his life and always took a prominent part in public affairs for the good of the people, and in every fight where he took up a cause it was for the betterment of the people among whom he lived and loved and was loved by them in turn. A devoted husband and an affectionate and fond father, a true and loyal friend, a fearless supporter of the right and a defender of the oppressed he leaves a place in the family and the community that time can never fill. John M. Gwin lived in an atmosphere of love. Though of strong convictions and of great willpower, he was possessed of a hart as unselfish and gentle as a child. In him there was charity -- charity white and still as the moonlight that shines into the shadows of the night. In him there was heroism -- the heroism of the knight that drew no sword, but waved in his hand high above his white plumed brow, the sacred wand of peace and love. In him there was patriotism, but a patriotism as pure and steadfast as a flame burning as a passion for the people he loved. After his long, useful and honorable life may his soul find peace in the glories promised by the prophets and the Saviour. Additional Comments: Buried in Gwin Cemetery in Richland Parish, LA. His grave marker gives his birthday as Oct. 29, 1845.
