All rights reserved. http://usgwarchives.net/copyright.htm http://usgwarchives.net/la/lafiles.htm ********************************************** GUSSIE SHORT McELWEE Funeral services for Gussie Short McElwee, of Delhi, will be held at 3:00 PM Tuesday, May 25, 2004 at the Delhi United Methodist Church where she was a member. Visitation will be held at the church from 2:00 until 3:00 PM immediately preceding the services. Rev. Joe Rountree will officiate. Burial will follow in the Delhi Masonic Cemetery under the direction of Cox Funeral Home of Delhi. Mrs. McElwee was born in Winnsboro, LA December 8, 1918 and died Monday, May 24, 2003 at the Richland Parish Hospital in Delhi after a lengthy illness. She was a native of Winnsboro and was "Miss Louisiana" in 1938. She graduated from Northwestern State College in 1939 and taught high school in Franklin Parish for several years afterward. She was married to Dr. Newell McElwee Jr., now deceased, and they moved to Delhi in 1947. She was actively involved in her church, the garden club, and other community activities. She is survived by one daughter, Margie McElwee of Monroe, LA; one son: Dr. Newell McElwee III, of Verona, NJ; and three grandchildren: Brant Jones of Ruston, LA, Sara Klug of Albany, OH, and Frederick McElwee of Verona, NJ. Pallbearers will be Jimmy Hopson, Tommy Bradley, Bruce Bagwell, Mike Thompson, Jimmy Strong, and Roy McIntyre. Honorary pallbearers will be Billy Cutler, Dr. Sam Scurria, Dr. Kenneth McDonald, and Dr. George Edwards. The family requests, in lieu of flowers, that memorial contributions be made to the Delhi United Methodist Church or the American Cancer Society.
