Shirley died Saturday morning at the Mercy Regional Medical Center. He was 75. A native of Louisiana, Mr. Shirley had been a resident of Vicksburg for the past 16 years. He was retired for the Warren County Highway Department, a Mason and a member of the Grace Baptist Church. He is survived by his wife, Elizabeth (Betty) Shirley of Vicksburg; three daughters, Mrs. John (Peggy) Lopanec of Greenville, Mrs. Leland (Ree) Henderson of Vicksburg, and Mrs. Alfred (Ann) Rollison; one son, Thomas C. Shirley of Stockton, N. H.; 11 grand- children; 21 great grandchildren; seven brothers, Audery Shirley and Grady Shirley both of Winnsboro, La., C. W. Weems of Springhill, La., Albert Weems, Luther Weems, Lloyd Weems and Clinton Weems all of Delhi, La.; four sisters Vaudie Upton of Delhi, Mertle McVay of Bastrop, La., Audie Mercer and Eunice Linder both of Winnsboro; and numerous nieces and nephews. Services will be Monday at 2 p.m. at the Chapel of Fisher Funeral Home with the Rev. Ken Pickens, pastor of Grace Baptist Church, and the Rev. Herman Hamilton officiating. Burial will be at Yokena Cemetery. Visitation will be from 2-4 p.m. Sunday. Pallbearers are Johnny Henderson, James Henderson, Kenneth Henderson, Bud Mullins, Robert LaBarre and Jeff Foster. Honorary Pallbearers are Harry Sherard, Ted Rule, Carol Flowers, Monty Hubbard and John Moody. **Submitter's notes: Johnny Elbert Shirley (called Elbert) was born September 27, 1911 in Winn Parish, LA, the son of Johnny Elbert Shirley, Sr., and Martha Lenora "Nola" Curry Shirley. He died October 25, 1986 in Vicksburg, MS. Until his move to Mississippi in 1970, he resided in Rayville, Louisiana where he and his wife, Betty, owned and operated a small grocery store. Elbert was married twice. His first wife and the mother of his children was Annie Olivia "Sweetie" Jenkins Shirley who was born 28 December 1916 in Wisner, LA and died 22 May 1945 in Dunn, LA. They married in Rayville, LA, 04 April 1931. His second wife was Elizabeth Virginia "Betty" Jones Shirley who was born 31 August 1917 and died 30 January 1992. Elbert and Betty were married in Rayville, LA, 25 May 1946.
