She was born June 16, 1889 at Flat Creek, Winn Parish, Louisiana. She married first Johnny Elbert Shirley July 15, 1906 in Winn Parish, Louisiana. Johnny died in 1911. Nola, with four small children to support, became the post- mistress of Wellsir, Louisiana in rural Winn Parish. She lived with her parents, and a couple of times a week the mail was brought in saddle bags to their home and she delivered the mail in her horse and buggy. She began this career October 18, 1912, and the "post office" was discontinued January 24, 1914, which was all right because by that time, she was married to Sam Weems and was expecting their first child. She married Samuel James Weems in Winn Parish, August 7, 1913. Sam preceded her in death by two years and one day. Interesting facts: Nola had a total of 54 grandchildren, 29 grandsons and 25 granddaughters. Between the years 1932 and 1960 (28 years), Nola was graced with at least one grandchild a year except the year 1947. At the time of her death, two grandsons had preceded her in death and one granddaughter had not yet been born.
