She will long be remembered for her good humor, compassion and resiliency. Born in Oak Ridge, she settled in Rayville in 1942 with her husband, James M. Shamblin, and her daughter, Mary Alta. Mr. Jimmy often commented that his wife would have been an excellent captain of industry. She put that industrious nature to good use in Rayville as the President of St. Hilda's Auxiliary for more than 50 years, as an active member and Regent of the Boeuf River Chapter of the DAR, as an accomplished bridge player and as a generous hostess in her beautiful home and gardens along the river. Throughout her life, she stayed abreast of local, national and international events and she always knew who was on the leader board in the latest golf tournament. Despite the fact that she suffered through two rounds of cancer, a broken hip and macular degeneration, her strong will and cheerful disposition enabled her to remain vibrant and independent almost until the end. Though she will be deeply missed, friends and family members are comforted by the fact that hers was a "life well lived." May she rest in peace. Mrs. Shamblin is survived by her daughter, Alta Shamblin Cate; her son-in-law, Richard Cate; her granddaughter, Jennifer Hawkins, and her husband, Alan Hawkins; two great-grandsons, Duval Gray Hawkins and Hanzo Perry Hawkins, and the following: nephews, great-nephews, great-nieces and their families: Francis Victor Jordan, Jr., Harrison K. Jordan, John T. Jordan, Francis Victor Jordan, III, Allen Jordan, Amelia Jordan, Harrison William "Bill" Jordan, Mark Jordan and Elizabeth Miller Stamper. Her "extended" family includes Bessie Tabb, the children of Anna Murphy and a host of dear friends who meant so much to her. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorial donations be made to St. David's Episcopal Church, 834 Louisa Street, Rayville, LA 71269. Visitation will be held from 5:00PM to 7:00PM at Mulhearn Funeral Home, 507 Foster Street on Tuesday, August 15 and services will be held at St. David's at 10:00AM on Wednesday, August 16.
