All rights reserved. http://usgwarchives.net/copyright.htm http://usgwarchives.net/la/lafiles.htm ********************************************** Mrs. Mahonia Elvira Stokes 1947 Mrs. Stokes dies was near 100 mark Mrs.Mahonia Elvira Stokes who celebrated her 99th birthday last December 14, died early Saturday morning at the home of her Daughter Mrs. Henry Goyne near Rayville, LA. Funeral services were conducted at Shady Grove Church of God Sunday afternoon with internment at McKnight Cemetery. Rev. E.L. Tanner of Monroe officiated assisted by Rev. Johns local pastor. Born at Marietta , Georgia, the daughter of Rebecca Hall and George W. Hughes. She moved westward with the family, stopping in Alabama, Mississippi and Arkansas. She married William Riley Stokes who served in the Arkansas Calvary during the war between the states. Five of their seven children survive. Two died as young adults. Mr. Stokes died in Mer Rouge in 1895. From doctors in her family, Grandma Stokes had learned much of the medicine and nursing that she used during her long and useful life. For 52 years she lived in northeast Louisiana in Morehouse and Richland Parishes. She made her home with her son but had gone to visit her daughter when the fatal illness occurred. Surving are the son, Earl J. Stokes and four daughters, Mrs. Zella Dunham, Mrs.Lula Rouse, Mrs.Irma Goyne, all of Rayville and Mrs.Mollie Nolan of Oak Ridge, LA. 40 grand- children, 91 great grandchildren and 17 great great grandchildren. Several neices and nephews including Joe and George Hughes of Drew, MS and a host of friends mourn her passing. Pall bearers were all grandsons of the deceased, Herman Stokes of Delhi, Louis Stokes and Willis Goyne of Rayville, Bennie Goyne of Monroe, W.M. Nolan of Oak Ridge and Jessie C. Nolan of Baton Rouge.
