Weems, 79-year-old retired Delhi farmer, died Friday night in a local nursing home after a long illness. Funeral services will be conducted at 2 p.m. today in the West Side Baptist Church in Delhi with the Rev. Glenn Byrd officiating. He will be assisted by the Rev. E. L. Hogan. Burial, with graveside masonic rites, will be in the Delhi Masonic Cemetery under the direction of Gay's Funeral Home of Delhi. The remains will lie in state at the funeral home until one hour prior to service time Mr. Weems, a Master Mason and Mason for about 40 years, was a member of the Delhi Masonic Lodge No. 120 F & AM. He was also a member of the West Side Baptist Church. Survivors include his widow, Mrs. Martha L. Weems, Delhi; four daughters, Mrs. Eunice Linder, Winnsboro, Mrs. Audie Mercer, Mangham, Mrs. Vaudie Upton, Delhi, and Mrs. Myrtle McVay, Bastrop; five sons, Albert, Clinton and Lloyd Weems, all of Delhi, Luther and C. W. Weems, both of Sarepta, La.; four brothers, Ben, Ervin and Walter Weems, Crowville, and Carroll Weems, Pinveille; one sister, Mrs. Martha Ann Peoples, Winnsboro; one step-daughter, Mrs. Eula Baum, Winnsboro; three step-sons, Ordrie and Grady Shirley, both of Winnsboro and Elbert Shirley, Rayville; 52 grandchildren and 19 great grandchildren. Pallbearers will be Otha Nielsen, O. P. Rainwater, W. T. Monroe, Bill Dowe, B. J. Walker and H. V. Byrd. **Submitter's Notes: Samuel James "Sam" Weems was born in Tullos, Winn Parish, Louisiana on December 26, 1882. He was the fifth child, fourth son of James Jackson "Jack" Weems and Sarah L. "Vicie" (Bass) Weems. He married Martha Lenora "Nola" (Curry) Shirley in Winn Parish Louisiana on August 7, 1913. Sam, Nola and their blended family moved from Winn Parish to Richland Parish around 1928.
