E. Whetstone Thus it becomes our painful duty to announce within the short space of two weeks and two days the death of both husband and wife. It was only Feb. 20th 1896 that Robt. Whetstone, Esq., departed this life, then so soon following was that of his distressed and afflicted wife, who died at the residence of her mother's Mrs. Larkin, at Oak Ridge, on Sunday, March 8th, 1896. She died about 7 a.m. It seems that death struck her on Saturday and late Saturday her son, J.R. Whetstone, received a telegram that his mother was having convultions. He accompanied by his wife, proceeded to her bedside, arriving about 9 p.m., but she was unconscious and never regained consciousness up to her death. She was forty years old Saturday, and as she passed out of her two scores she enters into a new life, or sleeps the sleep that cannot be disturbed by the trials and vicitudes of this wicked world, and it is to be hoped, prepared to stand in the last day as she was a most excellent lady. Kind, affectionate and indulgent mother, was she to her children, and they will never more know the value of a mother's love and care. None can realize this except those who have been bereft of a mother. It is sad indeed to lose a father, the mainstay of a family, but far worse to lose the ever watchful care of a mother. Quite a crowd of both old and young, went up on Sunday to pay tribute to this lady who was greatly beloved by all her neighbors. The funeral did not take place till Monday as they desired to await the arrival of Rev. W.P. Browne, the Episcopal minister, to conduct the services. May God in his wisdom comfort and console the children, may her death teach the importance of self reliance to fight the battle of life and also teach them another important lesson that sooner or later they too must die.
