All rights reserved. http://usgwarchives.net/copyright.htm http://usgwarchives.net/la/lafiles.htm ********************************************** Ed Askew Ed Askew, Mayor of Hodge, died Monday afternoon, Sept. 26, 1983, at Jackson Parish Hospital in Jonesboro, after a lengthy illness. Mr. Askew, born in Bluff City, Ark., and a longtime resident of Hodge, served as Mayor of Hodge for 39 years. He was a former employee of Rock Island Railroad for 15 years, and in 1940, became traffic manager for Continental Can Co. From 1974 to 1982, he was the crusade chairman for the American Cancer Society of Jackson Parish, holding that office longer than any other chairman. He was a former member of the Lions Club, and Monroe Traffic Club, and served as Grand Marshal for the Jonesboro-Hodge Jaycees Christmas Parade in 1982. Mayor Askew was a member of the Hodge Lodge No. 363 F and AM, where he was past master, and was a Shriner, receiving his 50 year membership certificate several years age. He was also a member of the Jonesboro Church of Christ. He is survived by one son, Dr. Ed Askew, Jr. of Morgan City, La.; two daughters, Mrs. Winnie Raggio of Jonesboro, and Mrs. Ann Alleman of Many, La.; one brother, Dale Askew of Lake Charles, La.; one sister, Mrs. Gwendolyn Buckner of Little Rock, Ark.; ten grandchildren; and eight great grandchildren. Funeral services were held at 2 p.m., Wednesday, Sept. 28, at Edmonds Funeral Home Chapel in Jonesboro. Brother Harley Sissons, and the Rev. Jimmy Miller officiated. Burial was at Hodge Cemetery. Pallbearers were grandsons, and grand sons-in-law. Honorary pallbearers were Men of Hodge.
