The apartments, one ground apartment, and one upstairs apartment owned by C. B. Tramel, went up in flames at approximately 11 p.m. Mr. and Mrs. Burnice Hardy, the upstairs tenants, were awakened by smoke. Hardy said the floor had begun to sink when they were getting out. The cause of the fire was determined as smoking in bed. Both apartments were a total loss, according to the Fire Dept. At 6 a.m. the following morning, fire once again broke out in the demolished two story apartment complex. Don Lyons phoned the Fire Dept., and for the second time in 7 hours, the fire was extinguished. Firemen answering the call were Chief Reo Wright, Jimmy Dees, Wayne Self, William Self, Brother Bill White, Bill Bugg, Robert Gentry, Johnny Byles, Doyle Faust, El Patterson, Dean Lambert, Ted DeLacerda, I. D. Bostian, and Chief of Police, Alfice Brumley.
