Ashley Funeral services were held Thursday, April 21, at 10:30 a.m., for Colvus J. (Jack) Ashley, a prominent Krotz Springs businessman and civic leader. Rites were conducted in the First Baptist Church of Krotz Springs, with burial in the Church cemetery. Officiating was the Rev. A. Johnson, pastor of the First Baptist Church, and the Rev. J. A. Carter. Ashley died at his residence in Krotz Springs at 5:30 a.m., Monday, April 18, following a brief illness. He was 72. He was born in Mitchell, in Sabine Parish, and was the son of the late Leonard Ashley, and Willie Loula Litton. Ashley was well known in the lumber industry, and was the owner of lumber companies in Krotz Springs, and Opeloussa. He was also owner of Ashley Lumber and Building Materials in New Iberia, and was the founder of what is now Louisiana Southern Forest Products Company in Port Barre. Ashby retired from the Missouri-Pacific Railroad in 1952, and had been a resident of Krotz Springs for 41 years. He was also involved in the tug boat operation in Krotz Springs, and was a charter member of both Masonic Lodges in Krotz Springs. Ashley is survived by his widow, Mrs. Marie Louise Gajan Ashley; a son, Rusty Ashley of Krotz Springs; two daughters, Mrs. Jack R. C. Goudeau Jr. of Plaquemine, and Mrs. Robert Tibbs of Cleveland, Miss.; a brother, Bill Ashley of Many; two sisters, Mrs. Roy Creech of Logansport, and Mrs. Aaron Sovet of Plaissance; and six grandchildren.
