All rights reserved. http://usgwarchives.net/copyright.htm http://usgwarchives.net/la/lafiles.htm ********************************************** The Sabine Index - Joseph Houston Allen 6 Mar 1936 - Joseph Houston Allen, 78, beloved prominent citizen of North Louisiana died at 3 a.m. Thursday at the Allen Sanitarium, Converse. Mr. Allen "Uncle Houston", as he was affectionately called by many of his friends, had had several periods of illness during the past five years, recovering from two strokes and died of pneumonia. He was active as a planter and merchant until the past five years and leaves a niche in the life and hearts of his community that will be long unfilled. Mr. Allen was related to several well known families of Louisiana and Mississippi. He is survived by his widow, Mrs. J. H. Allen, two sons, Dr. W. G. Allen and John L. Allen of Converse; six daughters, Mrs. Estelle Smith, Oak Grove, Mrs. Birdie Burkett and Mrs. A. E. Slay, Converse, Mrs. Dan Bailey, Benson, Mrs. R. H. Richie, Beaumont, Texas, and Mrs. O. L. Sanders, Pleasant Hill, 29 grandchildren and eight great-great grandchildren. Funeral services were held at Friendship Baptist church and burial at Oak Grove cemetery by Drewett Funeral home last Thursday.
