Allen, 73, of Nacogdoches, Texas, were held at 2 p.m., Sunday, March 23, 1997, at First Baptist Church. The Rev. Dr. Allen Reed officiated. Burial was in Sunset Memorial Park. Allen died Friday, March 21, at Memorial Hospital. Born May 12, 1923, in Winnsboro, to James Ira Abrams and Fannie Allen, he attended schools in Louisiana, and graduated from Many High School in 1939. He was a student in pre-med at Centenary College, Shreveport. He served in the U.S. Army while in Medical School from 1944 to 1946, and graduated with a MD degree from Louisiana Stat University Medical School in New Orleans in 1947. Dr. Allen spent one year in internship at Tri-State Hospital (now Willis-Knighton Hospital) in Shreveport from 1947 to 1948. He married Patricia Pattison of Mansfield on May 7, 1948, and began practicing medicine in June, 1948 in Merryville. He practiced in Jasper, Texas, then in March 1949, he moved to Nacogdoches, Texas. His children, Patricia Ann, James I. Jr., and Walter C. P. Allen were all born in Nacogdoches, Texas. For two years, June 1953, to June 1955, Allen served in the U.S. Air Force, stationed at Biggs AFB, where his fourth child, Mary Aileen was born. Dr. Allen was head of the Obstetrics and Gynecology Department at Ellsworth AFB. In June 1955, he returned to Nacogdoches, and resumed his practice specializing in family practice, with his office over Swift Brothers and Smith Drug Store. In November 1959, Dr. Allen moved his practice to 2516 North Street, where he went into partnership with J. Frank Beall, MD, and T. J. Pennington, MD, under the professional name of Medical and Surgical Group. Dr. Allen was a life member of the Texas Medical Association, a member of Nacogdoches-San Augustine County Medical Society, former member of Nacogdoches Memorial Hospital Staff (where he had been a member since 1957), and was made a Fellow in 1972. A member of First Baptist Church, he was faithful in his Rotary membership, as another rotary contributor to the betterment of his community. He is survived by his wife; two sons, James I. Allen Jr., and wife Mary Ellen of Atlanta, and Walter C. P. Allen of Nacogdoches, Texas; one daughter, Patricia Ann Harris and husband Robert Chesley Harris III of Lufkin, Texas; one sister, Viaud Marcel of Helena, Montana; and four grandchildren, Emmett Allen Pack; three nephews, James Larry Skinner of Many, Asa Allen Skinner of Leesville, and Dr. Jesse Marcel of Helena, Montana. Dr. Allen was preceded in death by one daughter, and one grandson, Mary Aileen Allen Angel, and Thomas P. Angel. Pallbearers were Richard Hull, Joe Max Green, D. N. Hull, Charlie Mann, Dr. L. W. Snider, and Dr. Steward Barron. Honorary pallbearers were Nacogdoches County Medical Society, Rowland Vannoy, and Nacogdoches Rotary. Memorials may be made to Gruber Evangelistic Ministries, the Nacogdoches Treatment Center, or First Baptist Church.
