Funeral services were held at the First United Methodist Church of Many, at 10 a.m., Saturday, Nov. 23, with the Rev. John Koelemay, and the Rev. Mark Bray officiating. Burial followed at the Many Cemetery, under the direction of Warren Meadows Funeral Home. Serving as pallbearers were Bill Boone, John Byrd, Eugene Fremaux, Dean Lambert, Johnny Mowad, and Rocky Wright. Mrs. Ammons was born on Oct. 5, 1916, in Bayou Blue, La., to Ellis Thomas Matherne and Ada E. Matherne. She married Clifton R. Ammons and moved to Many, where she raised her family and became involved in community activities, including the Many Business and Professional Women's Club. She had been an active member of the First United Methodist Church of Many since 1940. She supported her husband in his many endeavors, which included the hard work involved in the passage of Amendment 8, and the construction of Toledo Bend Lake. She was also instrumental in the creation of the Sabine Parish Housing Authority, serving as director, and in the building of federal housing units. She is survived by two daughters, Dr. Dianna Johnson and her husband Dr. Rusty Johnson of Memphis, Tenn., and Suzanne Jeanne Ammons of Many; two sons, Robert D. Ammons and wife Connie, and Kenneth E. Ammons and wife Donna, all of Many; one brother, Paul "Buddy" Matherne of Marietta, Georgia; six grandchildren, Monte Ammons of Kansas City, Max Ammons of Nashville, Tenn., Karen Ammons Warren of Many, Spencer Redburn of Houston, Davy Ammons of Natchitoches, and Paul Ammons of Many. She also has three step grandchildren; four great grandchildren; and four step great grandchildren. She is also survived by a host of nieces, nephews, and friends. Mrs. Ammons was preceded in death by her husband; son, Larry Ammons; and brothers, Rouby Matherne, and Ussey Matherne. Warren Meadows, Many, La.
