The boy, in swimming with several other youths, either appeared to have developed cramps, or became exhausted, and drowned. Other boys who were swimming with him made attempts to rescue him, with no avail. The divers recovering the body of Armstrong were Steve Hayes, Bill White, Dolph Williams, Valmore Byles, and Clauriste Byles, all of the Sheriff's Rescue Squad. On the scene were Sheriff Harold Sandel, Deputy Elwin Patterson, Delmar Davis, Jack Brown, and Sgt. C. J. Miller, and Sgt. Jerry Rains of the State Police. Recovery of the body was made within 45 minutes from the time the divers arrived on the scene. The Rev. Bill White, Civil Defense Director says, "The citizens who volunteered their services and boats are to be commended in the assisting of the rescue crew". Further investigation is being made by the Sabine Parish Sheriff's Department. Members of the Coast Guard Auxiliary were on the scene within 15 minutes after the drowning, according to Vice Commander L. L. Williams. Williams, along with Dr. Warren Founds, roped off the approximate area where Armstrong went down.
