Buvens, Sabine Parish B-152 Source: Sabine Index, Many, La., Apr 6, 1945 Submitted by: Tammy Larche tammy@cp-tel.net Felix. H. Buvens 6 Apr 1945 - First Lieut. Felix. H. Buvens, USMN, 25, son of Mr. and Mrs. Felix N. Buvens, Many, was killed in action in the battle of Iwo Jima Feb. 22, according to notice received by his parents March 26 from Lieut. General A. A. Vandergrift, commandant of the U. S. Marine Corps. Lt. Buvens was graduated from Many high school in 1937 and enlisted in the marines in July of that year. He received boot training at Parris Island S. C. and for several years was stationed aboard the U.S.S. Battleship Wyoming as a gunner. Following this assignment, he was made a recruiter and served in that capacity until February 1943 when he entered officers training school. He was graduated from the 22nd reserve officers class at Quantico, Va., and received his commission as second lieutenant May 5, 1945. Lt. Buvens participated in the battles for Roi and Namur in the Marshalls and Saipan and Timian in the Marianna islands. After the battle of the Marshalls, he was promoted to the rank of first lieutenant. He was wounded in action on Tinian and subsequently was awarded the Purple Heart. Lt. Buvens was married in May 1943 to the former Miss Betty Gray of Rome, Ga., and was the father of a baby daughter, Elizabeth Ann, whom he had never seen. In addition to his parents, wife and baby, Lt. Buvens is survived by two brothers, Francis of Houston, Texas, Norman of Many and one sister, Bobby, also of Many. ****************************************************** Obituaries: C. H. Manasco, age 79 years, were held 1 p.m. last Wednesday at Mt. Carmel Baptist church. Rev. W. G. Bailey officiated. Interment was in Mt. Carmel cemetery, Massingill funeral home in charge. Surviving are two sons, Albert and Tom Manasco; sister, Mrs. Elle Bailey, all of Many, route 4. ****************************************************** Obituaries: W. E. Worsham, Jr., Sabine Parish W-625 Source: Sabine Index, Many, La., Apr 6, 1945 Submitted by: Tammy Larche tammy@cp-tel.net W. E. Worsham, Jr. 6 Apr 1945 - Marine First Lt. W. E. Worsham, Jr., son of Mr. and Mrs. W. E. Worsham of Florien was killed Feb. 19 on Iwo Jima, the war department has reported. He was 26 years of age. A veteran of three years service with the marines, he had participated in the invasion of the Marshalls and Marianas. Before entering the marines in 1942, Lt. Worsham was assistant agromnist in charge of the Louisiana soil testing laboratory. He held B. S. and M. S. degrees for LSU and was a member of Phi Kappa Phi, Alpha Zeta and Sigma Xi fraternities. Besides his parents, he is survived by one brother, Lt. Marshall L. Worsham, serving in Germany, and one sister, Miss Rose E. Rev. Smith of Shreveport officiated. Interment was in Sibley's cemetery, Massingill funeral home in charge. Surviving: wife, two daughters and mother, all of Shreveport; two brothers, B. F. and V. H. Ellzey, both of New Orleans, two sisters, Mrs. T. E. Owens, and Mrs. C. R. Rev. C. W. Williams of Many, assisted by Rev. Reed of Plainview and Rev. V. K. Fletcher of Florien officiated. Interment was in Plainview cemetery, Massingill funeral home in charge. Surviving are: wife, Mrs. Mary E. Dowden, Hornbeck; two daughters, Mrs. F. C. Chance, Hornbeck and Mrs. F. T. Edwards, Oak Ridge, Tenn.; four sons, G. A. Dowden, Toledo, Ore., B. F. Dowden, Klimath Falls, Ore., S. E. Dowden, Beaumont, Texas, P. B. Dowden, Longview, Wash.; step-daughters, Mrs. Tom J. Moore, Hugo, Okla., Mrs. Cleo Ellzey, Florien; brother Young Dowden, Peason, 21 grandchildren, three great-grandchildren. Mr. Dowden was a longtime minister of Sabine parish. He died at the home of his daughter, Mrs. F. C. Chance, Hornbeck.
