Carroll 4 Aug 1944 - Funeral services for Sidney L. Carroll, who died Sunday in Colfax, were held Tuesday, Aug. 1, in the Many Methodist church at 10:30 a.m. Services were conducted by Rev. J M. Alford of Colfax, assisted by Rev. R. T. Pynes and Rev. L. N. Hoffpauir of Many. Mr. Carroll was born near Noble Sept. 15, 1872. He was one of Sabine's leading merchants for many years. He is survived by his widow, Mrs. Ada Fraser Carroll; one daughter, Mrs. Myles Danner of Charleston, S. C.; one son, Dixon Carroll of Shreveport; five grandchildren, Irwin Dixon Carroll, Sidney Carroll, Malcom Danner, Mary Carroll Danner and Olivia Danner. The active pallbearers were George H. Thomas, T. M. Phillips, Robert Gay, Glen Phares, Ralph Fraser, James Bower, Dr. S. F. Fraser and Edwin Fraser. She was born near Fort Jessup and had lived there all her life. She married Clarence Miller in 1929. From this union of marriage are eight children. They resided near Fort Jessup all their married life. Funeral services were conducted July 25 in the Miller graveyard by Rev. Neal of the Nazarene church of Many. Prayer was offered by Rev. C. Durr of Friendship Nazarene church, obituary reading by Rev. Laidlow of Many Pentecostal church. Surviving are her husband, C. J. Miller; eight children: C. Rev. W. W. Conerly, son of the deceased officiated, assisted by T. Pynes. Interment was in Prospect cemetery, Massingill funeral home directing. Pallbearers were: J. T. Davis, A. D. Davis, N. L. Crnkovic, Sabine Parish C-652 Source: Sabine Index, Many, La., Aug 11, 1944 Submitted by: Tammy Larche-Smith tammy@cp-tel.net The Sabine Index - Cpl. Joseph M. Crnkovic 11 Aug 1944 - Cpl. Joseph M. Crnkovic of the United States marine corps was killed in action while on overseas duty. His family received a wire from the war department July 23, but his death occurred June 15 on Saipan, Marianna Island group. He also fought in the battle of Tawara and others. He received his basic training in San Diego, Calif., from where he left for overseas duty August 1942. When he left for his examination he didn't get 21 days off like others. After his training he left for overseas and never got a furlough. He is survived by his parents; six brothers, Pfc. Steve, Pfc. Johnny, Frank, Pete, Donald and Wilburn (Mickey) Crnkovic. Cpl Crnkovic graduated from Zwolle high school in 1940 and was a member of St. Joseph's Catholic church, Zwolle. Their hearts are sad for the one they loved so well. Cpl. Crnkovic has two brothers in the service: Pfc. Steve Crnkovic, stationed in Greenwood, Miss., who is home on pass to see his parents, Pfc. Pilcher, was inducted Feb. 16, 1942 and received his basic training at Camp Walters, Texas. He was sent to Fort Benning, Ga., where he received paratroop training, completed his training in North Carolina. From there he was shipped to North Africa, Italy, Ireland, England and finally to France where he was killed June 20. Sgt. Pilcher is survived by his wife, the former Miss Nan Blanton of Heflin, Ala.; two brothers, Cpl. Curtis Pilcher in France and Riley Pilcher of Many route one; parents, Mr. and Mrs. R. M. Father J. A. Benoit was celebrant of the requiem mass. Father N. F. Vandegaer of Monroe gave the funeral sermon, Father H. ? Hubbley was in the Catholic cemetery under direction of Massingill funeral home. Pallbearers were: R. G. Risor, J. T. Dees, J. M. Belisle, Jim Tyler, Ray Quayhagen and Harvey Miller. Surviving are two sons, Wallace of Many, P. J. of Leesville; one daughter, Mrs. Sam Brown of Many; one sister Mrs. Julie DeKeyzer of Many; six grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. Uncle Tom as he was known to his many friends, passed away at the home of his daughter, Mrs. Sam Brown, last Thursday evening after a brief illness. Rev. W. G. Bailey officiated. Interment was in the Antioch cemetery under direction of Massingill funeral home. Pallbearers were: Curtis Hildebrand, Herman Salter, Clyde Salter, Harshell Evans, Valry Salter, Jack Salter and Horace Salter, Jr. Surviving are: wife; four sons, Presley R. of Jasper, Texas, James Fred of Longview, Texas, Howard O. of Florien, Woodrow in the air forces at Lincoln, Neb., eight grandchildren. Mr. Salter passed away at the family home near Florien last Friday after a lengthy illness. He was known as Uncle Rance and will be greatly missed by all who knew him. Sibley, age 24, was killed in action July 28, according to a telegram received by his parents. He was in a medical detachment. Cpl. Sibley was inducted into the army Oct. 3, 1941, served one year in the States and was sent overseas September 19. He was stationed in England until he was shipped to France for the invasion. A letter from the war department stated: "There was no information available. Reports of this nature contain only the briefest details as they are prepared under battle conditions and means of transmission are limited. Cpl. Sibley is survived by his parents, Mr. and Mrs. J. B. Sibley, one brother, Cpl. Doris W. Sibley, somewhere in France; two sisters, Misses Lucill and Imogene Sibley. *******************************************************************
