in Lake Loring Sunday were conducted 4 p.m. Monday at Bayou Scie
Methodist church by Rev. J. D. Wagnon, assisted by Rev. A. D. St.
Amant, both of Zwolle. Interment was under direction Warren
funeral home.

  Pallbearers were Joe Rains, J. P. Wyatt, P. R. Barr, Carlton
Lehr, S. L. Campbell and Virgil Early.

  3 Aug 1951 - Last rites for Sam Jones Byrd, 45, who was
fatally injured in a car wreck June 21, were conducted at 10 a.m.
Monday, June 23, at Pisgah Baptist church by Rev. J. P.
Fortenberry. Interment was in Pisgah cemetery under the direction
of Hixon funeral home.

  Pallbearers were George Woolley, Wiley Woolley, Herman McNeely,
Wilson McNeely, J. P. Koonce and Clarence Byrd.

  Surviving relatives include: The parents, Mr. and
Mrs. D. Byrd of Toro, two brothers, Amos of Toro and Taylor of

The Sabine Index - W. C. Cobbs

  17 Aug 1951 - Funeral services for W. C. Cobbs, 55, were held
at 2 p.m. Monday at the Spring Ridge Baptist church with the Rev.
Needham Clunkett officiating. Burial was in the Spring Ridge
cemetery under the direction of Drewett funeral home of
Mansfield.

  Mr. Cobbs, a veteran of World War I and a farmer, died at 3
a.m. Saturday at his Pleasant Hill home.

  Surviving are two daughters, Miss Betty Jane Cobbs of
Pleasant Hill and Mrs. R. L. Owens of Shreveport; three sons,
William M of the U. S. navy, Thomas Ray and Patrick of Pleasant
Hill; his father, C. M. Cobbs, Pleasant Hill; two sisters, Mrs.
Virgil Rains of Henderson, Texas, and Mrs. Noel Rains of
Carthage, Texas; four brothers, Lee, Obrey and Walter, all of

The Sabine Index - David James Cook

  3 Aug 1951 - Funeral rites for David James Cook, 71, were
held 10 a.m. Tuesday from Drewitt funeral chapel with Rev. P. J.
O'Dwyer, pastor, St. Joseph's Catholic church, Mansfield,
officiating. Burial was in Highland cemetery, Mansfield. He is
survived by his widow, and two sons, Earl Cook, Monroe, and D. J.
Cook, Jr., Shreveport, Mr. Cook died 9:30 a.m. Monday after an
illness of several days.

  Mr. Cook had been a resident of Mansfield for 32 years. He had
been sanitarium for the department of health since 1940. His
duties covered both DeSoto and Sabine parishes, working out of
the local Sabine parish health unit. He was well known in Many
and Sabine parish, where he had many friends.

The Sabine Index - Clarence Burton Halbert

  24 Aug 1951 - Mayor Clarence Burton Halbert, 66, of Zwolle
was claimed by a heart attack Wednesday, Aug. 15, at his home.

  During the 25 years he lived in Zwolle he was an active member
of the First Baptist church, having served as superintendent of
the Sunday school for 20 years, and being the senior deacon. He
was clerk of the Sabine Baptist association and active in all
phases of church work.

  He was a charter member and past president of Zwolle Lions
club. Previous to his present term he served eight years as mayor
of Zwolle.

  Mayor Halbert was a descendent of pioneer settlers of east
Texas, having been reared at Milam where his family had lived for
over 100 years.

  Funeral services were held at the First Baptist church,
Zwolle, at 4 p.m. Thursday by Rev. J. D. Wagnon, assisted by Rev.
Basil Halbert of Houston, Texas, and Rev. Joe Flanagan of
Shreveport. Interment was in the Halbert family cemetery, with
Masonic service at the graveside.

  Mr. Halbert is survived by his widow, Mrs. Essie Payne
Halbert; two sons, Maurice C. and James A. of Houston, Texas; two
daughters, Mrs. Eva Mae Hackney of Huntsville, Texas, and Mrs.
Rubye Peterson of Zwolle, and eight grandchildren.

The Sabine Index - A. L. Phillips

  17 Aug 1951 - A Pleasant Hill man was killed Monday in an
accident at the Reynolds Lumber mill at Pleasant Hill.

  A. L. Phillips, 60, an employee of the miss, was struck by a
piece of flying lumber on the chest at 9 a.m. He died almost
instantly.

  Dr. H. M. Prothro of Pleasant Hill performed an autopsy which
revealed that the blow had crushed Mr. Phillip's heart.

  Funeral rites were held at the Spring Ridge Baptist church.
Burial was in the Spring Ridge cemetery under the direction of
the Drewett funeral home of Mansfield.

  Surviving are his widow; four daughters, Mrs. S. D.
Osborne, of New London, Texas, Mrs. H. Westbrook, of Hornbeck,
Mrs. Robert Moore, and Mrs. Elma Patton, of Pleasant Hill; three
sons, Truitt of Shreveport, Robert of the U. S. Navy, and Thomas,
of Pleasant Hill.
