Deputy Sheriff R. B. McDonald investigated the accident, and he said that as Bass was cutting a hardwood tree off of the stump, it lodged in another tree, and kicked up, hitting Bass in the face and chest. The butt of the tree knocked Bass backwards, pinning him and his saw under the tree. It killed him instantly. Cornell Ebarb, also of Hemphill, was decking logs with a bulldozer nearby. When he started to deck the tree Bass had cut, right before the tree that killed him, he noticed the tree lodged. He said he did not see Bass or hear him, so he got off the dozer to investigate, and found him pinned under the tree. Both men were working for A. A. Collins, logging contractor, who was hauling for Chandler Lumber Co. of Hemphill. Case and Monk Funeral Home of Nacogdoches, Tex., took charge of the body.
