James Reece Bray, 76, died in Schumpert Medical Hospital at 6:45 a.m. following an extended illness. Bray was the great-grandson of N. H. Bray, who came to Sabine Parish from England. The elder Bray founded the Slagle and Anacoco Masonic Lodges and was a circuit judge and Baptist Preacher in Sabine and Vernon Parishes. Born on March 1, 1903, Bray was the son of Edward Cavel Bray and Minerva Nabours Bray. He had seven brothers and four sisters. On June 5, 1927, Bray married the former Amanda Tompkins. They became the parents of one son, Hollis. Over the years, Bray was involved in a number of professions, including farming, ranching, logging, buying timber, contracting in the oil fields, and developing land in the area. He retired about five years ago. Survivors include his widow, Mrs. Amanda Bray of Many; one son, Dr. Hollis Bray of Many; two brothers, Willard L. Bray and Kelsey Bray, both of Zwolle; two sisters, Mrs. Clara Wedgeworth of Zwolle, and Mrs. Bertha Parrott of Many; and two grandsons, James Paul Bray and Brian Reece Bray, both of Many. Funeral services were held at the Many First Baptist Church on Sunday, Sept. 24 at 3 p.m. Dr. Rod Smith and the Rev. Elton Martin officiated. Burial was in the Many Cemetery under the direction of Warren Meadows Funeral Home. Pallbearers were Max Teasley, Carl Carringan, Vernice Wright, R. L. Wolf, David Bray, Jr., Grif Warren, Jimmy Bray and Dr. Norman Tompkins. Honorary Pallbearers were Horace Tompkins, K. C. Bray, Jr., John Tompkins, E. C. McCormick, C. C. Nabours, Willard McCormick, Victor Tompkins, Edwin Ball, Lloyd Owens, Simon Leone, Melton Wright and Melvin Wright.
