She was 89. Mrs. Burke was born to Wilson and Lily Pilcher in Florien, on May 29, 1903. She attended school in Florien, and went on to a normal school in Natchitoches. She taught in Klondike School on Marthaville Road, and the Byrd School, which is now under Toledo Bend Lake. She was married to Clarence Brumley in 1921, and lived in Minden, where they operated a shoe store until his death in 1965. In 1974, Mrs. Verda, having returned to Sabine Parish prior to this, married Mr. Ora Burke. They made their home on Ritter Street. They loved visiting Mr. Burke's children; Mrs. Doris Earnest, Mrs. Helen Johnson, and Mrs. Maxine Watson, and their families in the Alexandria area. The funeral was at Warren Meadows Funeral Home, conducted by Rev. Joe Ratcliff, pastor of First Baptist Church, of which the Burkes were members. Brother Ratcliff said during the funeral, that you'd never know these three stepdaughters were not hers. There was deep devotion shown by all four. Mrs. Verda Burke will be sadly missed by her extended family of nieces, nephews, and three relatives, plus a host of friends. She was interred in Many Cemetery. She was preceded in death by her parents; one brother, Norman Pilcher; two sisters, Jane Brumley, and Clara Warren. Pallbearers were Ronald Johnson, Gordon Anthony, Steve Beasley, LaVelle Marritt, Robby Lang, and Bill Beard. Honorary pallbearer was E. L. Palmer.
