Byrd (Photo) Services for Captain James H. Byrd, 57, of Caddo Parish Sheriff's Dept., were held at 2 p.m., Monday, Jan. 16, 1989, at Centuries Memorial Funeral Home Chapel. The Rev. Claude Spearman, Chaplain of the Caddo Parish Sheriff's Dept., officiated. Burial was in the Centuries Memorial Park. Capt. Byrd, a lifelong resident of Shreveport, died Friday, Jan. 13, at Willis-Knighton Medical Center, after a sudden illness. He was born in Many. Capt. Byrd was a veteran of the U. S. Army. He was a retired major with the Shreveport Police Dept., after 27 years of service. He was a member of the First Baptist Church of Shreveport. He attended Centenary College, and Southern Methodist University. He was a member of American Legion Post #14, the La. Peace Officer's Assoc., The Municipal Police Officer's Assoc. Of La., ROCIC, NSA, and the Caddo/Bossier Narcotics Task Force. He had received numerous letters of appreciation and commendation from City, Parish, State, and Federal law enforcement agencies; Appreciation for helping, LSA Convention, Lowe McFarland - "American Legion's Law and Order" Award - 1973, Lincoln Parish appreciation for help on investigation - 1980, Oil City appreciation for help on investigation - 1981, Regional Organized Crime Information Center appreciation - 1983, Bossier City Police Dept. appreciation letter, Shreveport Police Dept. appreciation letter. Capt. Byrd was serving his ninth year as Director of the Office of Criminal Intelligence and Narcotics, making a total of 36 years of law enforcement service. He is survived by his wife, Mrs. Nancy M. Byrd of Shreveport; parents, Hazel Brooks, and stepfather, Louis H. Brooks of Shreveport; mother-in-law, Polly Morse if Shreveport; three step sons, Leonard Pierce of Columbia, S. C., Greg Pierce of Florence, S. C., Bryan Pierce of Shreveport; one son, Roger Byrd of Shreveport; one sister, Judith B. Smith of Dallas, Texas; one grandson, Jason Lee Byrd of Shreveport; and a host of other relatives and friends. The Sheriff's Dept. Honor Guard, and the Shreveport Police Dept. Honor Guard conducted the graveside services. Pallbearers were Lt. Ron Strother, Sgt. Sam Stubblefield, Paul Tipton, Jay Wright, Bill Duncan, Joe Morris, Ret. SPD Assistant Chief, Sam Burns, and Ret. SPD Capt. Rick Berry. Honorary pallbearers were Caddo Parish Sheriff's Dept., and Shreveport Police Dept. Officers.
