Byrd, 57, of Marina, Tex., were held Monday, July 19, at 11 a.m., at Seaside Mortuary, with a U.S. Army chaplain from Fort Ord officiating. Burial was at Mission Memorial Park in Seaside, with full military honors. Mr. Byrd, a resident of the Monterey Peninsula for the past 20 years, died Tuesday, July 13, at Brook Army Medical Center, Fort Sam Houston, Texas, after a short illness. He became ill while vacationing in Louisiana, and was taken to the army hospital. Mr. Byrd had lived in Marina for about a year after residing in Seaside for 19 previous years. He was born in Florien, La., on April 25, 1919. Mr. Byrd was a retired 23 year veteran of the U.S. Army, serving during both World War II, and the Korean War. He was also a retired cook, who had worked 11 years in civil service employment at Fort Ord. Mr. Byrd was a member of Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 8679 in Seaside. He is survived by his widow, Chizue (Betty) Byrd of Marina; sons, Johnny Byrd of Salinas, Larry Byrd of Marina, and Tony Byrd of Pacific Grove; daughter, Judy Byrd of Pacific Grove; sisters, Jenny Schmith, Becky Voges, Ruby Self, and Pauline Nelms, all of Hornbeck, La.; brothers, Arthur Byrd, and Clarence Byrd, both of Florien, La.; and two grandchildren.
