According to Sabine Parish Sheriff George R. Cook, the boat swamped in waves. Deputy Simolke tied Bridges to a snag to keep him out of the water, and as he turned to find something on which to support himself, he saw Bridges slump over. The two men were in the water (Simiolke held onto a tree), until early Saturday morning, when two participants of the fishing tournament being held out of Flying Bridge Marina, rescued Simolke, and brought him to shore. They notified the Sheriff's Department, and Deputies Guffie Lynn Pattison, and Elbert Tarpley went out in a boat and picked up Bridges' body. It was taken to Warren Meadows Funeral Home in Many, where it was examined by Deputy Coroner V. M. John, who reported Bridges had died of natural causes. Sheriff Cook reported to the Index, that after returning to Minden, Deputy Simolke had suffered a heart attack, but his condition was said to be "okay."
