Birdwell George Washington Birdwell, 88, of the Bethany Community near Marthaville, died suddenly Thursday, Dec. 26, enroute to the Natchitoches Parish Hospital. He had been in ill health for several years. Funeral services were held at 2 p.m., Saturday, in the Jennings Congregatonal Methodist Church, with the Rev. Sammie Mitchell, and the Rev. Foster Jennings officiating. Burial was in McCaskill Cemetery, under the direction of Drewett Funeral Home of Mansfield. Mr. Birdwell was the last surviving charter member of the Jennings Chapel Congregational Methodist Church. Survivors include his widow; 10 sons, Preston Birdwell, Luther Birdwell, Hoyt Birdwell, Raymond Birdwell, Harvey Birdwell, Herman Birdwell, Vernon Birdwell, Wilmer Birdwell, and Harold Birdwell, all of Marthaville, and Odell Birdwell of Shreveport; 38 grandchildren, and 24 great grandchildren. Serving as pallbearers were his grandsons, Marlin, George, Bobby Dean, Mike, Coy, Bruce, Lester, and Steve.
