Birdwell, 80, of Marthaville, died Friday, Oct. 6, 2000, at 12:20 p.m., at Willis Knighton North Medical Center in Shreveport. Funeral services were held at 10 a.m., Sunday, Oct. 8, at Jennings Chapel Congregational Methodist Church, with interment following at Bethany Cemetery at Marthaville. The Rev. Edwin Fenton, the Rev. David Hill, and the Rev. Brian Jennings officiated. Mr. Birdwell was a native, and lifelong resident of Bethany Community. He was a retired school bus driver for the Natchitoches Parish School Board, and farmer. He was a member of Jennings Chapel Congregational Methodist Church, where he was a song leader. He led the singing for countless area revivals. He was a World War II veteran, serving in the U. S. Army, and U. S. Air Force. He was the last member of the original "Birdwell Brothers Quartet", who sang at the 1984 World's Fair in New Orleans, and numerous other places. Survivors include his wife of 55 years, Orene Gandy Birdwell of Marthaville; two sons, Coy Birdwell, and Keith Birdwell, both of Marthaville; two daughters, Naomi Ray of Plano, Texas, and Vecile King of Marthaville; two brothers, Herman Birdwell, and Vernon Birdwell, both of Marthaville; 10 grandchildren, Grant Birdwell, Ben Birdwell, Savannah Birdwell, Kerry King, Joseph King, all of Marthaville, Jenni Brown of Rison, Ark., Brandon Birdwell of Jacksonville, Ark., Matthew Ray of Plano, Texas, Brian Ray of Robeline, and Andrea Pickett of Provencal; three great grandchildren, Mehhan Pickett of Provencal, Baylee Ray of Robeline, and Kimberly Brown of Rison, Ark. Pallbearers were Marlin Birdwell, Brandon Birdwell, Charles "Mott" Birdwell, Hal Birdwell, Steve Birdwell, Mike Birdwell, Gary Birdwell, and Winston Birdwell. Honorary pallbearers were Robert Gentry, Jim Given, Johnny Glover, Merwin Mitcham, Terry Waxham, Elmer Walker, John Vercher, W. E. Dowden, George Birdwell, and Otis Gandy.
