Dead was Joe Lynn Brumfield, son of Evelyn Sweet Brumfield and Charles Brumfield, both of Many. According to Sheriff George R. Cook, his deputies received a call at 9:50 p.m., from Fraser Hospital, in reference to a gunshot victim. Deputies Billy Ray Skinner, and Ben DuBose were dispatched to the hospital, where they found that Brumfield had been shot under the right eye at close range. The deputies reportedly questioned family members at the hospital, but failed to come up with any explanation as to what happened. They continued their investigation at Sweet Town, where the incident occurred. Fifteen year old Malcom Sweet, who was hunting with Brumfield at the time of the accident, provided details of the shooting. The youth stated that he and Brumfield were rabbit hunting, and were about 20 feet apart, when he heard a gun fire. Sweet told deputies that he turned and saw Brumfield fall to the ground. Sweet ran over to the victim, saw that he was shot, and then ran to get his father, Charles Sweet. When Sweet and his dad arrived back at the scene, Brumfield was reportedly lying face down with the gun underneath him. Upon investigation at the scene, deputies discovered that a three inch number 6 shot shell in the chamber of the .410 gauge bolt action gun had been fired. Deputies believed that Brumfield probably had stuck his gun in a nearby anthill, and was looking down in the barrel to see if it was plugged. The gun accidentally discharged. Funeral services for Brumfield were held at the Morning Star Baptist Church in Many, on Sunday, Oct. 23, at 2 p.m. Burial was in the New Jerusalem Cemetery, under the direction of Thomas Mortuary of Many. Survivors of the youth include his parents; five sister, Mrs. Ernestine Starks, Edna Brumfield, Sherry Brumfield, Omega Brumfield, all of Many, and Mrs. Evelyn Drew of Florien; seven brothers, Jimmy Taylor, Hugh Taylor of Shreveport, Charles Brumfield Jr., Willie Steve Brumfield, Henry Brumfield, Wallace Brumfield, all of Many, and John L.
