Barnes James Roy Barnes, 61, of Blanchard, died at 1:15 a.m., Wednesday, Sept. 8, at Veterans Administration Hospital, after a long illness. Funeral services were held at 1 p.m., Friday, in the Osborn Funeral Home Chapel. Burial was in the Provencal Cemetery in Provencal, with graveside services at 4 p.m. Mr. Barnes had been a school teacher in the Natchitoches and Caddo School systems for 27 years, retiring in May. He was a native of Pleasant Hill, but has lived in Blanchard for 18 years. Mr. Barnes was a deacon in the Blanchard Baptist Church. He was an Air Force veteran of World War II, and a life member of the Caddo Teachers PTA. He earned his B.S. degree from Northwestern State University, and his M.S. degree from Stephen F. Austin College. Survivors include his widow, Mrs. Jackie Morris Barnes of Blanchard; two daughters, Mrs. Kathryn Powell of Denver, Colo., and Bettye Ruth Barnes of Blanchard; two brothers, Jeff O. Barnes of Shreveport, and Robbie G. Barnes of Provencal; five sisters, Edna Mae Walker of Logansport, Mrs. Bertie B. Allen of Serepta, Mrs. Marjorie Moore of Grant, Mrs. Hazel Sutton of El Paso, Tex., and Mrs. Thelma McCann of Greenwood, Miss.; and one grandchild. Officiating for the services were the Rev. W. P. Meers, pastor of the Blanchard Baptist Church. He was assisted by the Rev. W. O. Harrell, pastor of the Assembly of God Church in Plainview, Tex. Pallbearers were Kent Allen, John Allen, Leeman Bissell, Luke Bissell, R. D. Barnes, Ernest Barnes, Jim Dodd, and Alton Dodd.
