"Mrs. Bornmann and her husband were night fishing when their boat hit a log in the lake," Sheriff George Cook explained. "The log knocked the motor out of the water, and into the boat." Cook said Mrs. Bornmann was sitting in the back of the boat when her husband walked back to lower the motor back into the water. "Big strong waves hit the boat and it capsized," the sheriff added. "Mrs. Bornmann, who had a life jacket on, was hanging onto the side of the boat. Mr. Bornmann was holding on to the front end of the boat. After several minutes of fighting the strong waves, Mrs. Bornman told her husband, "I can't hold on any longer." Bornman told the authorities that about that time, she became limp, and floated away from the boat. Bornmann had tied himself to the boat with a tow rope, but said it was at least an hour before he was rescued. Mrs. Bornmann's body was discovered Sunday, April 7, at 8:30 a.m., about a mile from where she had drowned. Her life jacket had snagged a limb. The Sheriff's Dept. was on the scene at the recovery. Sheriff Cook was very appreciative to Ft. Polk and the Sabine Parish Civil Air Patrol for dispatching planes to Toledo Bend Lake, and for all the volunteers who aided in the recovery of the body.
