Chapman A boating accident claimed the life of Clarence M. Chapman, a 41 year old Dallas, Texas man, at 6:30 p.m., Saturday, when he and three others were fishing in Toledo Lake at Pendleton Bridge. According to S. T. Barron Presler of Dallas, one of the passengers in the boat, they were moving along toward going under the bridge, when their boat hit a submerged object, throwing the boat into a bridge pillar. All the men were thrown from the boat. Chapman, who was not a swimmer, according to the men with him, did not come up. Recovery operations were started by the Sabine Parish Sheriff's Department until dark, and they resumed again early Sunday. Escaping serious injury or maybe death, were J. W. Duhon, T. Barron Preslar of Dallas, Joseph Paul Dyer of Bossier City, who were in the boat with Chapman. Recovering the body about noon Sunday, was Valmore Byles, Sheriff-Civil Defense Diver. Assisting in the recovery operations were Sheriff's Deputies Travis Bennett, Floyd Terrell, Civil Defense Auxiliary Sheriff's Deputy Jack Napier, Wild Life and Fisheries Department officials Guy Singletary, John Gentry, and Bill Hall of the Pendleton Bridge Marina, who was very helpful in using his facilities in the operations. Dr. Walter Poimboeuf, Sabine Parish Coroner of Pleasant Hill, pronounced the death a coincidental drowning.
