Cook (Photo) A blanket of sadness and grief swept over Sabine Parish shortly after 2 p.m., on Wednesday, June 21, when official word was received that Sabine Parish Sheriff George R. Cook had died. Cook, who was 60 last Friday, June 16, died at 2 p.m., in Highland Hospital in Shreveport. He had been hospitalized for the past several weeks, after being in poor health for the past ten months. Cook graduated from Pleasant Hill High School, and farmed for two years in Pleasant Hill, before joining the Louisiana State Police in 1940. His law enforcement career spanned 40 years, and he gathered the respect and admiration of many for is honesty and fairness while he was a public servant. In 1953, Cook resigned his commission with the Louisiana State Police in order to run for City Marshal of Many. He served in that capacity until 1971, when he was named to succeed Harold Sandel, who had resigned as Sheriff. In February 1972, Cook was elected Sheriff, and then after an active campaign, was re-elected in 1976. Sheriff Cook never wore a gun. He said he had the Lord on his side, and that was all the protection he ever needed. Standing over 6 feet tall, Sheriff Cook gained the respect of fellow law enforcement officers over the years. A member of the Many First Baptist Church, Sheriff Cook was a faithful member. He also belonged to the Sabine Parish Chamber of Commerce, the La. Peace Officers Assn., and the Louisiana Sheriff's Assn. Survivors include his widow, Mrs. Doris Cook of Many; two daughters, Mrs. Carol Cook Henry, and Miss Lou Cook, both of Many; a brother, John Cook of Many; one sister, Mrs. Sally Salter of Many; one grandson, Clay Henry. Funeral arrangements were pending as of press time Wednesday. (Eds. Note: A tribute to the late Sheriff will be paid next week in the INDEX).
