Cates, 49, of Shreveport, were held at 11:30 a.m., Saturday, Jan. 5, at the Rose-Neath Funeral Home, Marshall Street Chapel in Shreveport. Mr. Cates died Wednesday, Jan. 2, at his home, following a sudden illness. The Rev. Claude Spearman officiated at the services. Burial followed in Centuries Memorial Park in Shreveport. Mr. Cates was a native of Converse. He had lived in Shreveport for the past 25 years. He was a self-employed petroleum landman. He was a member of the Shreve City Baptist Church, a Shriner, and a member of the Elks Club. Survivors include his widow, Kathleen Cates of Shreveport; one son, John A. Cates of Shreveport; three daughters, Joy Cates, and Ava McFerren, both of Shreveport, and Donna Ginles of Logansport; five sisters, Vera Barnett of Longview, Tx., Lertie Nash of Minden, Inez Cates of Shreveport, Veniceta DiGia of Farmingdale, N. Y., and Anita Jones of Baytown, Tx.; three brothers, Unez Jones of Lake Charles, Arlon Cates of Converse, and Albert Nash Cates of Jewett, Tx., and two grandchildren. Pallbearers were Wallace Attaway, T. J. Naron, Tom Dunn, Marlin Colton, Frank Herrington, and Waymon Kaye.
