Chalupuik was chief horticulturist for the gardens for over 20 years. He went to work with the late A. J. Hodges, Sr., founder of Hodges Gardens, during the seven years the gardens were under construction, prior to opening them to the public in 1936. He helped plan and select the colorful plantations that made Hodges Gardens such a picturesque show place. Although the gardens have changed through the years, his original pattern is still evident in a great many areas. From 1956 until he retired in 1971, he wrote "Notes from a Garden in the Forest", a column published in daily and weekly newspapers in the five state area of Louisiana, Texas, Oklahoma, Arkansas, and Mississippi, including the Sabine Index. It was also published in a number of gardening magazines, and "Hodges Gardens Ma?", a picturesque quarterly, which became a keepsake. He was highly respected nationwide for his "vast learning". He was a native of Poland, and a graduate of the University of Krakow in Krakow. He came to the United States from England, where he worked in such famous places as the Kew Gardens in London. He served in the British Army in North Africa and Italy during World War II. He is survived by his wife, Sheila of Foley.
