Carhee Four Negro children were orphaned when their parents were killed in a two car collision, Tuesday, Dec. 22, at 7:35 p.m., on the Marthaville Road, about one and one half miles from Many. The victims were Gene A. Carhee, 28, who was dead at the scene, and his wife, Claudie, 28, who died about an hour after the wreck at Many Clinic. They were the parents of Jacqueline Carhee, 6, Antoine Carhee, 4, Anthony Carhee, 2, and David Carhee, 1. Jacqueline sustained a fractured arm and leg, while Anthony was being observed for fractures of both legs. Antoine was slightly injured. All were taken to Doctors Hospital in Shreveport, except David, who was taken to another hospital. He was not in serious condition. Also injured seriously was Nora L. Turner, 19, of Many, and Vaness Shelby, 14, of Many, was slightly injured. Antoine, Anthony, Jacqueline, and Turner were reported still in a Shreveport hospital, Monday. According to State Trooper Wingate Dowden, who investigated, the Carhee car was traveling south at a high rate of speed. It was three feet over the center line of the highway. At the crest of a hill, the Carhee vehicle met another vehicle driven by Jimmy Brumfield, 18, Many Negro, and the two vehicles collided. Passengers in Brumfield's car were Donald Ray Sweet, John Brumfield, and Robert McClanahan. None were injured. The inured were at first taken to Fraser Hospital and Many Clinic. Assisting Trooper Dowden in the investigation were Deputies Jimmy Pleasant, and Floyd Terrell of Sabine Parish Sheriff's Office. Santa Clause visited the Carhee children, bringing them toys donated by the Salvation Army. The family was returning from Natchitoches, where they viewed the Christmas lights, when the mishap occurred.
