Corley 24 Dec 1981 - Death claimed former Sabine Parish Tax Assessor Thersa V. Corley, 72, at 3:15 a.m. Friday, Dec. 18 at Fraser Hospital South. Mrs. Corley admitted herself to the emergency room of the local hospital after suffering from severe chest pains. She died a short time later. Funeral services were held at the St. John the Baptist Catholic Church Saturday, Dec. 19 at 2:30 p.m. Father Gustave Bergeron officiated, Giving the eulogy was Msgr J. C. Vandegaer, brother of Mrs. Corley. Six other priests were also in attendance included; Msgr Testa, representing the Bishops. Burial was in the St. John Cemetery under the direction of the Warren Meadows Funeral Home. Serving as pallbearers were Quinton Corley, Carl Corley, Donald Corley, Ed Corley, Kenneth Corley and Paul Wolf. The week prior to her death had been one of sharing with others and food, friends and fellowship. She attended several Christmas parties in the courthouse and the many Business and Professional Women's party Monday night. Dec. 14, in fact, the afternoon preceding her death she had enjoyed the company of courthouse friends and employees of leasing firms at a special party. Theresa Vandegaer Corley was born in Sabine Parish to Dan Vandegaer and Elisabell Eason Vandegaer in 1909. Her father was the parish surveyor for a number of years. She attended school at St. Johns Academy and graduated in 1926. For years she was employed by Vandegaer Abstract in Many. She worked for the Sabine River Authority from 1961 through 1963, making the certificates for all the land that was purchased for Toledo Bend Lake. Mrs. Corley began working in the Tax Assessor's Office in 1963. In September, 1973 she was appointed to fill the unexpired term of Mrs. Carro Taylor, who died in office. One year later she ran for the office and was elected to a four year term. In 1978, Mrs. Corley ran again, but was defeated. She retired in December 1980 and soon she and son, John, opened Corley Abstract. Mrs. Corley was the widow of the late Marion Corley. A daughter, Patcy Corley Vines, pre-deceased her mother. Civically, Mrs. Corley was an active person. She was a member of the Sabine Parish Chamber of Commerce, and a member of long standing in the Many Business and Professional Women's Club. She has served as club treasurer.
