Trooper Napier was the first notified of the accident at 6:52 a.m., Sunday. A passer-by sighted a wrecked pick-up truck in a ditch, approximately 3.5 miles west of Florien on La. Highway 474. According to the trooper, the truck was in three pieces when discovered. The body of Jo Lee Chreene Jr. was still in the cab of the pick-up. Chreene was declared dead at the scene. Trooper Napier conducted an investigation and pieced the events prior to the accident together. Chreene was apparently traveling at a high rate of speed, when his truck failed to round a curve, and went out of control. The truck hit the side of a bridge, traveled 75 feet through the air, and nose dived into a ditch near the creek bed. Chreene was apparently traveling alone at the time of the accident. According to friends who saw him shortly after midnight, the youth was heading home. Funeral services were held Monday, Jan. 12, at 4 p.m., in the Antioch Baptist Church. The Rev. Harold Dunn officiated. He was assisted by the Rev. Bryan Ray. Burial was in the Antioch Cemetery, under the direction of the Warren Meadows Funeral Home. Pallbearers were Tony Stewart, Dennis Downs, Charles Farris, Allen Corley, Tony Langton, Craig Ferguson, Ronnie Koch, and Darwin Carroll. Survivors are his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Joe L. Chreene of Florien; two sisters, Shelia Chreene of Florien, and Gail Stewart of Many; one brother, Wayne Chreene of Florien; and his paternal grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. R. I. Chreene of Converse. Chreene was a junior at Florien High School, where he was popular with the teachers and students. Classmates remember Chreene as having a "great personality." Chreene was named Outstanding Basketball Player in the 8th and 9th grades. He started out with the Florien Blackcats Basketball team in the 11th grade. The above average student was actively involved in the 4-H, the Future Farmers of America, and other school activities.
