The Sabine Index - Cpl. Joseph M. Crnkovic

  11 Aug 1944 - Cpl. Joseph M. Crnkovic of the United States
marine corps was killed in action while on overseas duty. His
family received a wire from the war department July 23, but his
death occurred June 15 on Saipan, Marianna Island group. He also
fought in the battle of Tawara and others. He received his basic
training in San Diego, Calif., from where he left for overseas
duty August 1942. When he left for his examination he didn't get
21 days off like others. After his training he left for overseas
and never got a furlough. He is survived by his parents; six
brothers, Pfc. Steve, Pfc. Johnny, Frank, Pete, Donald and
Wilburn (Mickey) Crnkovic. Cpl Crnkovic graduated from Zwolle
high school in 1940 and was a member of St. Joseph's Catholic
church, Zwolle. Their hearts are sad for the one they loved so
well. Cpl. Crnkovic has two brothers in the service: Pfc. Steve
Crnkovic, stationed in Greenwood, Miss., who is home on pass to
see his parents, Pfc. Johnny Crnkovic, stationed at Hattisburg,
Miss, now home on leave.
