Davis, 87, Negro, died Friday, May 4, at 3:25 a.m., from burns received in a fire of his home in Many. The fire was reported to have started from the bed where the man was smoking. He got up from bed, but fell down at the door before he could get out. The room that he was in was totally destroyed by fire. The damages to the house were estimated at $2,000. Dr. V. M. John, deputy coroner, pronounced him dead at the scene. Jack Hilton, the area Fire Marshal, investigated the fire, and determined the cause was from smoking in bed. Volunteer firemen answering the call, were Chief Reo Wright, Alfice Brumley, Bill Bugg, William Self, Asst. Fire Chief Jimmy Dees, Johnny Byles, I. D. Bostian, Jamiel Sliman, El Patterson, and Ronald Kingrey.
