(Shorty) Dukes Memorial services for Gordon E. (Shorty) Dukes, 55, were held Wednesday, Feb. 22, at the Antioch Baptist Church. Rev. Wilton Anthony, and E. E. Walker officiated. Interment was in Antioch Cemetery, under the direction of Warren Meadows Funeral Home. A special message, and taps were delivered by the D.A.V. Chapter #21. Present were his many friends and family from not only the local region, but ranging from as far as Texas, Colorado, Montana, and Oregon. Mr. Dukes passed away very unexpectedly on Feb. 19, 1995, at his home near Twin Islands. Mr. Dukes was born on July 21, 1939, in DeRidder. He served in the U. S. Navy, aboard the U.S.S. Munsee, stationed in San Diego, Calif., before settling for a time in south central Oregon. Eventually, Shorty followed his heart back to western Louisiana, and to the climate that best suited his favorite pastime, flower gardening. Those who knew the soft-spoken man insisted he could root a broom handle. Mr. Dukes is survived by his parents, Clifford and Annie Dukes of Many, Rex and Theresa Dukes of Many; a daughter, Brenda Palma, and husband of Many; a brother, Bobby Dukes and wife of Klamath Falls, Ore.; two sisters, Delores Bagett and husband of John Day, Ore., and Jackie ? and husband of Denver, Colo.; four grandchildren; and many aunts, uncles, nieces, and nephews. Pallbearers were Stafford Miller, Lamar Mitchell, Frank Dew, Lawrence Brandon, Earnest Richard, and Dewey Burr.
