Dickens (Photo) Memorial services were held for Mrs. Betty M. Dickens, at 2 p.m., on Oct. 2, 1993, at the Aimwell Baptist Church, Zwolle. Officiating at the service was pastor, Steve Neesley. Mrs. Dickens, age 65, of Zwolle, was born Feb. 1, 1928, in Seminole, Okla. She passed away at 8:30 p.m., Sunday, Sept. 26, 1993, at the Sabine Medical Center in Zwolle. In her death, as in her life, Betty was dedicated to serving the medical profession. Thus, in the hope that others will benefit from her gift, it was her wish that her body be donated to the LSU School of Medicine in Shreveport. Believing that this gift is a gift of life, her wish was honored by her family. Mrs. Dickens, preceded in death in 1992, by her husband, Charles P. Dickens, resided at Toledo Nursing Center in the last year of her life, where she was lovingly cared for by their wonderful and dedicated staff. Mrs. Dickens was one of the center's most favorite residents, becoming known for her kind spirit, her great sense of humor, and her spunkiness. She developed many lasting friendships there, organized group activities, which she hoped brought fun and laughter into their lives. She was even voted to represent the center as their Valentines Day "Queen", having received the most votes for this exulted title. She was truly loved. During much of their lives together, Betty and Charles lived at the Toledo Bend Fly-Inn Villa, having moved there in 1976, from South Bend, Indiana. They both served together for many years, as active members of the Aimwell Volunteer Fire Department. Betty was a lifetime member of the Shreveport/Bossier Auxiliary #30, Disabled American Veterans (DAV), where she once served as a commander. She also devoted numerous years as a member of the Zwolle/Ebarb Post 5187, VFW Auxiliary. Betty also held several posts with the Order of Eastern Star in Shreveport. Mrs. Dickens was a nurse by profession, and devoted more than thirty years of her life to helping the sick. She served as a dedicated, respected, and dearly loved nurse, at several hospitals in the Sabine Parish area, including Fraser North, Pleasant Hill, and lastly, at the Sabine Medical Center. Mrs. Dickens will forever be loved and missed by her family; son, Charles F. Dickens and his wife Veronica of Vacaville, Calif.; daughter, Carolyn Dickens-Lowe and her husband Alexander of San Jose, Calif.; sister, Elta Long of Shreveport; brother, David Majors and his wife Elaine of Zwolle; nieces, Sharon, Janet, and Karen; nephews, Ernest, and Anthony; grandchildren, Michael, Elizabeth, Curt, Brett, Renee, and Duane; great grandchildren, Athena, Andrea, Janae, Devan Shaynon, Brittany, and Rebecca. In honor of her memory, donations may be made in her name to three local organizations, "Patient Activities Fund" at the Toledo Nursing Center, Aimwell Volunteer Fire Dept., and Aimwell Baptist Church, all of Zwolle.
