Dowden Services for Mr. Alvin C. Dowden, 68, of Leesville, were held at 4 p.m., Tuesday, March 7, 1989, in the First Baptist Church of Leesville. Officiating was the Rev. Wallace Palmer, and the Rev. John Burns. Burial followed in the Self Cemetery, under the direction of Hixson Guardian Chapel of Leesville. Mr. Dowden passed away Sunday, March 5, 1989, in his residence. He was a 1938 graduate of Hornbeck High School. He attended LSU, where he earned a Master's Degree in education, and a plus 30. He was a one time principal of Leesville Junior High School, and was a teacher with the Vernon Parish School Board since 1942, in Business, Science, and Vo-Ag. He retired from the school system in 1978, was elected as a Supervisor of Child Welfare and Attendance, and Adult Education. He was in the US Army from 1942 to 1947, was a member of the Human Resources Council, Charter Member of the Civitan Club, a member of the first Baptist Church of Leesville for over 40 years, was on the Board of Directors of the Vernon House, and the Vernon Sheltered Workshop, was a Charter Member, and on the Board of Directors of Public Investors, was a member of the American Legion, Droddy Cain Post #145, was a member of the VFW Post #3106, and was a member of numerous other community projects. Survivors include his wife, Merle Bray Dowden of Leesville; one son, Alvin C. Dowden Jr. of Leesville; two daughters, Sharon Stone, and Debbie Clark, both of Leesville; two brothers, J. T. Dowden of Leesville, and Aubrey Edgar Dowden of Hornbeck; and eight grandchildren. In lieu of flowers, family requests that memorials be made to the Civitan Scholarship Fund, the Vernon House, or the Vernon Sheltered Workshop.
